The Hero Behind the Latest Volvo Designs Awarded by Autocar

The second-generation XC90 arrived in 2015, and in the two years’ since, its evocative interior and exterior design, innovative technology, and safety have won it more awards than any other SUV in the 21st century so far. Part of that is due to the design work of Thomas Ingenlath, who draws from Scandinavian design traditions. Recently, his work net him the “Design Hero” award by Autocar.

Our first look at Ingenlath’s touch came from the Volvo Concept Coupe in 2013, the first of three prototypes that paves the way for the XC90, and the rest of the brand’s latest offerings. Inside and out, you’ll find classic Swedish visual themes, like clean, uncluttered lines, classically-inspired proportions, and striking nuances. When Igenlath accepted the award, he brought an example of his work with him—a V90 T5 Inscription with an interior of walnut wood inlays, Nappa blond and charcoal leather, a panoramic moon roof, and Maple Brown exterior paint.

You can hear Ingenlath talk about the XC60’s design in the video above. To experience other models he’s developed, contact our Volvo dealership in Riverhead, NY. We can fill you in on models and powertrain options, and set up your test drive appointment.
